They voted from their smart phones and they voted from home or work. They voted from their PCs and they voted from their Macs. They voted for local track heroes and touring series stars. All told, they voted nearly 40,000 times.
And now the fans have their say. Those votes from near and far have all been tabulated and verified and it's time to announce the 2010 Speed51.com ARBodies.com Late Model Most Popular driver as Trey Mitchell.
The Texas native has found himself a home in the PASS South Super Late Model series and met up with plenty of fans along the way. He was in the running for last year's award and since then has managed to shake a few more hands and kiss a few more babies on the way to a commanding victory.
Mitchell was right in the thick of the battle for the MPD award all season long, but locked it down after a flurry of votes late in the year.
Californian driver Matt Scott, a regular at All-American Speedway locked down second place in this year's competition while another Texas representative, JT Schnid rounded out the podium.
Very different portions of the country were represented in fourth and fifth. Georgia Super and Pro Late Model driver Bubba Pollard and Seekonk Speedway (MA) Pro Stock (Super Late Model) ace Tom Sculley, Jr. were in those slot after the votes were counted up.
This was the first time that a Texan had won the award. Andy Pugh, Ross Kesenth and Nick Murgic are all former Speed51.com ARBodies.com Most Popular Drivers.
The ARBodies.com Late Model Most Popular Driver award has been an annual tradition at Speed51.com, the leader in asphalt short track racing coverage on the Internet, but there has never been the kind of fan response towards voting as there was this year.
“40,000 votes? Wow!” said Jerry Criswell of ARBodies.com. “It is almost unbelievable how big this Speed51 Most popular driver contest has gotten.”
“To see how this competition grows by year to year is just amazing,” said Speed51.com's Mike Twist. “I mean, you expect it to get bigger but to see both the numbers and the enthusiam of the fans get to the point that it has is nothing that I could have predicted. Short track racing fans are the best and they've picked a worthy driver to be this year's Most Popular Driver.”
And Mitchell isn't the only winner. Being partnered with Speed51.com to present the award has helped to build awareness of the ARBodies.com brand. Trey Mitchell will receive an ABC “Package A” kit from ARBodies.com after winning the award. That puts him in the company of many different winners.
“Our Bodies are proven winners and we look forward to how 2011 works out for Trey,” said Criswell. “Our Customers had a tremendous season in 2010 - winning both the Snowflake 100 with Chase Elliott and the Snowball Derby with Johanna Long. Within the PASS Series our customers also had a tremendous 2010 with Johnny Clark in the North and Preston Peltier in the South Winning the PASS North and South Championships as well as the PASS National Championship. Andy Loden won three races in a row, along with several pole positions, using our Flange Fit ABC Bodies.
AR Bodies has become an innovative leader in the ABC body field, which was developed several years ago to help create a uniform set of body rules for Late Model series and tracks throughout the country, while also offering the bodies at an economical price for racers.
