One Minnesota driver who would be happy to take home $10,000 this weekend from the American Speed Association® Kwik Trip Midwest Tour presented by ECHO Outdoor Power Equipment and GrandStay® Hospitality is 2008 ASA Midwest Tour Champion, Dan Fredrickson.
Fredrickson was a regular with the ASA Midwest Tour since its inception until this season when he wanted to stay closer to home while his father-in-law was ill. It has not stopped Fredrickson from success on the track, however. So far in 2011, out of four races, Fredrickson has two feature wins at Elko Speedway.
Elko Speedway is a high-banked 3/8 mile oval with over 45 years of racing history. The track is notorious for 2-wide racing from green to checkered and some of the most competitive racing in the Midwest. In fact, last year's ASAMT event at Elko Speedway was a nail-biter to the finish. Chris Wimmer and Ross Kenseth battled side-by-side, lap after lap before Kenseth finally took the checkered flag.
In September of 2009, Fredrickson won the ASA Midwest Tour event at Elko Speedway and would love to do it again and take home the $10,000 jackpot. "I've been dying to get back to ASAMT racing. It will be a bit of an adjustment going from 40-lap weekly features to 250-laps, but it will be fun and everyone's excited" said Fredrickson.
"I don't think the amount of money up for grabs will change the aggression of the drivers. I don't think a driver is going to wreck someone because they are racing for money. It's 250 laps....it's going to be a long race," added Dan.
While a win is a win, ask almost any driver and they will probably tell you that winning in front of a full grandstand is one of the best feelings in the world. Fredrickson is one of those who is hoping for a good fan turn out. In fact, for the first time ever, the fans will determine the final provisional to get into the race.
The driver with the most fans in the stands, who has not already gotten into the race, will be given a fan provisional. Drivers must have at least 50 fans to be eligible. Fans will need to take their ticket to the table in the Marketing Midway and register for their favorite driver. All tickets will be marked and cannot be used twice.
This weekend's events kick off on Friday with an all-new qualifying format and the Prelude to the Clash for the top sixteen drivers. Qualifying begins a 5:00PM, opening ceremonies at 6:45PM and racing at 7:00PM.
