CRA Takes on the High Banks of Winchester This Sunday

Champion Racing Association will be taking on the famous High Banks of historic Winchester Speedway this Sunday, May 1st. Sunday will be the season opener for the Northern Tour of the CRA Super Series in the Manning Service 100. The EDCO Welding CRA Street Stocks will have their third event of the season. The Vore’s Welding & Steel CRA FWD Compacts will have their first point’s event of the 2011 season on Sunday.

The CRA Super Series has had 31 events to date at Winchester Speedway. 2009 and 2010 CRA Super Series Champion Johnny Van Doorn heads the list of competitors entered for Sunday’s Manning Service 100 that have been to victory lane with the series at Winchester. Other former winners entered includes Scott Hantz, a three time winner at Winchester, he is currently tied with Bull Baker and Brian Ross with the most series victories at Winchester. Two time winner Tommy St. John is entered with his own team for the 2011 season. Single event Winchester winners also entered includes Ross Kenseth, who won the Manning Service 100 last year, Peter Cozzolino who makes a return to the series in 2011, along with CRA veterans Jeff Lane and Rick Turner.

Lane will be recognized Sunday as he becomes the first CRA Super Series competitor to make 200 starts when he takes the green flag for Sunday’s Manning Service 100. Hantz is currently second in starts with 186, Turner and 1997 Champion Kenny Tweedy are tied for third with the most series starts with 184 apiece.

Other top CRA Super Series drivers entered for Sunday’s event include Tweedy, Joe Beaver, Jason Dietsch, Tyler Roahrig, Damon Ecoff, Brian Campbell, Eddie Van Meter, Aaron Pierce, Danny Jackson, Colin Nickolai, Jim Crabtree Jr., Terry Fisher Jr., Jay Niewiek, Adam Purdy, and Nick Gullatta. The series has a good group of registered Rookie of the Year candidates entered including Derrick Griffin, Matt Hall, Justin Alsip, Coland Toland and Mason Mingus. A couple of drivers will make long hauls to race this weekend’s event in preparation for the 40th Annual Winchester 400. North Carolina native Ryan Blaney, son of NASCAR racer Dave Blaney and Oklahoma’s Donnie Wilson, who had one of the fastest cars in last year’s Winchester 400, will both be racing Sunday.

Sunday will be the third event of the season for the EDCO Welding CRA Street Stocks. Chad Poorman won the season opener at Plymouth Speedway and Josh Poore got the win last Saturday night at Anderson Speedway. Poore comes into Sunday’s event as the series new points leader by six points over second place Jeff Lane. Josh Myers is in third place, Steve Christman in fourth and rookie J.J. Schafer is in fifth place. A great field of Street Stocks is expected this weekend, the first two events had an average of 28 cars per event.  The series will have a total of four events at Winchester this season.

The Vore’s Welding & Steel CRA FWD Compacts will begin their 2011 points season on Sunday after having a non-points event at Plymouth Speedway that was won by Tom Hellinga. Several series veterans and rookies will begin their quest for the 2011 series Championship on Sunday, which will be the first of ten series events on the High Banks in 2011.

There will be an open practice at Winchester Speedway on Saturday. Pits open at 10am, practice will run from 12noon until 5pm. Pits open on Sunday at 8am. Practice will begin at 10:30am with qualifying starting at 12:15pm. The race program will begin at 2pm and will include 8 lap heats and a 20 lap feature for the Vore’s Welding & Steel CRA FWD Compacts, 10 lap heats and a 40 lap feature for the EDCO Welding Street Stocks and the Manning Service 100 for the CRA Super Series.
