A lot can change in a week at Bowman Gray Stadium.
Just one week ago in the GMAC Insurance Modified Series, Jonathan Brown of Winston-Salem was fighting for the lead with Burt Myers of Walnut Cove. Myers got the best of him, overpowering him to claim the win.
But on Saturday, situations reversed and Jonathan Brown was the one grabbing the lead away from Myers. Brown then went on to take the win with Myers finishing behind him in second.
Myers qualified on the pole with a blistering lap and grabbed the lead when the green flag waved. Tim Brown of Rural Hall gave a few stout bumps to Myers’s rear bumper and tried to pass on the outside lane during a double-file restart.
But as Tim Brown was caught on the outside, Jonathan Brown slipped into second. That allowed the #53 of Jonathan Brown to choose the outside lane during a double-file restart and pull up door-to-door with Myers.
Jonathan Brown pushed to pass Myers on two occasions but was unsuccessful. In the closing laps, Jonathan tried a different approach: He gave a stuff bump to Myers as they came out of turn three, pushing Myers into the outside groove. Jonathan Brown flew to the inside, taking the lead away from Myers.
“We’ve had a fast car every week, we just haven’t had the luck to seal the deal,” said Jonathan Brown. “Tonight, we got our win.”
Tim Brown finished third and Jason Myers came in fourth.
The “Madhouse Scramble” put Kevin Wilson of Elkin to the pole for the start of the second 50-lapper. Randy Butner of Pfafftown started on the outside front row and stole the lead away from Wilson during the opening laps.
Butner was pressured heavily by rookie Danny Bohn of Huntersville, but Butner held on to take his first win since 2007. “It wasn’t a gimme. We had to get up on the wheel and stay there to hold him off. There were so many different restarts,” said Butner.
Bohn finished second. Burt Myers, who battled forward from a 15th place start, finished third.
In the Webb Heating & A/C Co. Sportsman Series, Kenny Bost of Kernersville won the first race, holding off Robbie Brewer of Winston-Salem. In the second 20-lapper, Kevin Neal of Walkertown took the checkered, with Taylor Branch of Lewisville finishing second.
The 104.1 WTQR Street Stock Series race had an unforgettable finish as Billy Gregg of Winston-Salem and Matt Cotner of Rural Hall fought for the win. They raced side by side and collided as they headed towards the checkered flag. Gregg ended up claiming the victory while Cotner slid across the finish line in second.
In the Freeman’s Auto Center Stadium Stock Series, Chuck Wall of Clemmons grabs the win in the first 15-lapper, with Billy Cameron Jr. of Salisbury taking the checkered flag in the second race.
