Any driver preparing for America’s most prestigious short-track races is happy to tell you, the battle begins before the green flag drops.
Qualifying and where you qualify are crucial factors for both the Allen Turner Snowflake 100 for Pro Late Models and the 44th annual Snowball Derby for Super Late Models.
Qualifying is, arguably, the most important variable, perhaps second only to tire conservation.
Twisted Tea hopes to provide a piece to a winning puzzle with the first-ever sponsored Qualifying Draws for both races at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Five Flags Speedway.
As part of the opening night Green Flag Party festivities, the widely-popular hard-iced will set 75 cans on stage and the drivers will vie for positions.
The Derby drivers will go first, selecting a can, flipping it upside down and discovering their qualifying spot number on the bottom of the can. Once the Derby qualifying order is set, the Snowflake draw will commence.
If drivers are unable to attend, Snowball Derby Queen Shailee Roshong will draw for them. Lady Luck could prove doubly merciful or doubly cruel because it also will mark the order for teams to choose their tires.
Twisted Tea is a brand of hard-iced tea that was introduced in 2001 by the Boston Beer Company, the makers of Samuel Adams Beer. Twisted Tea features nine flavors, including “Backyard Batch” and “Midnight,” and is sold in bottles, cans, mix packs, and cardboard mini-kegs.
The 44th annual Snowball Derby kicks off with opening night ceremonies Wednesday, Nov. 30. The Super Late Models begin practice sessions Thursday, as local division drivers will vie for their own Derby crowns Thursday and Friday nights. The Pro Late Models will battle for the celebrated Snowflake 100 title Saturday, all leading up to the Derby on Sunday.
